1928 Kolster K-20 Early AC Radio with Matching Speaker3805940
1928 Kolster model K-20 early AC radio with its matching Kolster K-6 speaker. Both the radio and speaker feature the unique claw feet. The radio works well, and picks up lots of stations with only a short 20' antenna. A long outdoor antenna as well as a ground connection is recommended for best reception. This is a 7-tube TRF radio with push-pull 171A output tubes. Correct globe type tubes are installed. It has good tone also, but since the speaker is a magnetic cone speaker, it is NOT high fidelity! The radio has a local-distance switch and a fine tuning control for the antenna. It is a single dial model, unlike earlier 3-dial TRF sets. The power cord is original but very short. You will have to use an extension cord to operate it. Both the radio and speaker were manufactured for Kolster by Brandes Products Corporation. The tuning drive drum is pot metal, and there is some distortion. However, it currently DOES WORK fine. The radio cabinet has been refinished. The sides and front are repwood (pressed wood). The knobs are original.
The speaker is a Kolster model K-6 Magnetic Cone Reproducer. The cord is original. The speaker cabinet has been refinished. The front and back grilles are repwood and have no damage or breaks. The sound is more of less typical of magnetic type speakers of the era. K-20 - These radios and speakers were actually manufactured for Kolster by Brandes Corporation which had been absorbed by Federal Telegraph Company in 1926. This is certainly one of my favorite radios. The K-20 Kolster sold for $190.00 in 1928(in todays money it is equivalent to about $2,200). |
