Philco Antique Radio 193412062
Philco 66B
This Philco was in production for nearly three years (1933-1936), and underwent a number of cabinet changes during this period. This radio was introduced in January 1934, and marked a milestone for Philco as it was their first tombstone style radio cabinet. The "M" in the model number stood for "Moderne" or "Streamlined Moderne," relating to a class of the Art Deco style that peaked in 1937. It sold for $37.50. The style "emphasized flowing forms, long horizontal lines, and sometimes nautical elements." This set also marked Philco's first use of black hexagonal shaped knobs. The finish on this case is beautiful and displays nicely. There are no cracks or splits. The knobs are original, and the grille cloth is a period replacement. The chassis has been gone over by a professional, and everything that needed replacing was replaced. The set plays fine, but reception is much better when attached to an extended external antenna. The dial is OK, and lights up nicely. This is a fairly heavy radio. This radio is a great example of Philco history. About 16"H x 12-1/2"W x 8-1/2"D.
This beautiful Philco 66B, Deco styled grille, first introduced in January 1934. 15,000 units were produced-including production of Model 60MB and Model 66B tombstones-which are similar. Original selling price: $37.50. This radio has been expertly restored and it is a gorgeous radio featuring a Mahogany front which is rare for radios of that period. Receives AM and shortwave bands and plays well. A graet Art Deco radio. Sold
